Last week, an Apex Legends Global Series tournament was hit with unexpected chaos when competitors were hacked live on stream, affecting their gameplay within the match. The incident led to the revelation of a major exploit that exposed the location of all players on the map, prompting the immediate suspension of the tournament. An inquiry was swiftly launched, resulting in the swift identification of the hacker responsible for the disruption.
In an exclusive interview with Tech Crunch, the hacker, known as 'Destroyer2009', shed light on his motivations behind targeting the tournament participants.
Following the incident, a wave of apprehension swept through the Apex Legends community, with many players avoiding the game out of fear of encountering cheaters. Destroyer2009 clarified in the interview that his actions were driven by a desire for amusement, utilizing a game vulnerability to disrupt the tournament. He emphasized that the hacks were contained within the game environment and did not extend beyond it.
In a bizarre attempt to rationalize his actions, Destroyer2009 suggested that the situation could have escalated further, implying that the outcome could have been more detrimental:
"Just imagine if it wasn't a joke and we didn't put any memes in the cheat, I'm pretty sure you can ruin someone's career if they had a cheat pop up on a tournament."
Furthermore, he defended his choice of targets by labeling them as 'nice guys' who he believed would benefit from the attention and exposure resulting from the incident. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the influence wielded by hackers in manipulating the gaming experience and impacting competitive events.
