Bungie Announces Major Layoffs and Team Transitions

Nathan Lees

This week, Bungie, the video game development company behind Destiny and Halo, among other titles, announced it would lay off 220 staff members. Gamers everywhere are in a state of shock at the moment, with many asking themselves what to expect next from the company.

Layoffs at Bungie hit every department, from quality control and player support through art, sound, music, and development. The list includes executives and senior leadership, begging questions of accountability higher up the chain of management.

While the layoffs have hit 220 staff, 155 of them are continuing to work at Sony, and another 75 have formed a new studio. There are often challenging times during the transition period, but it can also open up new avenues of growth and learning.

In response to these layoffs, former employees turned to social media to express their frustration and disappointment. Communities have also weighed in on their assessment of how these layoffs will affect the future of Bungie's games in general.

Through all this transition, gamers are going to witness many structural and operational changes in Bungie. It remains to be seen at the same time if more executives will be held liable for the layoffs. One thing, however, is very transparent: this may just turn out to be the single biggest turn of events within the entire frame of history for Bungie.
