Fortnite Dominates Console Playtime, Surpassing Major Titles in December 2023

Nathan Lees

In an astonishing display of popularity, Fortnite has achieved a remarkable feat in the gaming world. According to a recent report by Ampere Analysis, console players dedicated over 1.6 billion hours to Fortnite in December 2023. This staggering figure surpasses the combined playtime of heavyweight titles like Call of Duty (including Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, and Warzone), EA Sports FC 24, Grand Theft Auto V/Online, and Roblox.

The surge in Fortnite's engagement can be traced back to November, following the launch of Chapter 4 Season OG. This update, which nostalgically reverted the game's island to its Season 1 form, led to a 146% increase in playtime compared to October. The momentum continued into December, rising by an additional 9%, coinciding with the introduction of three new game modes: Lego Fortnite, Fortnite: Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival.

Lego Fortnite, developed in collaboration with The Lego Group, offers a survival and crafting experience akin to Minecraft. Rocket Racing, from the creators of Rocket League, Psyonix, is an exhilarating arcade racer. Fortnite Festival, designed by Rock Band studio Harmonix, is a unique music game where players can perform in a band or solo to tracks from popular artists.

Lego Fortnite

Despite expectations of a normalization in engagement as the novelty of Lego Fortnite wears off, Louise Wooldridge, Ampere Analysis' research manager for games, suggests that the confirmed return of Fortnite OG in 2024 could maintain the game's dominant position.

Fortnite's success story is a testament to its evolving nature and ability to continuously captivate its audience. For more insights, follow the detailed report by Ampere Analysis.
