Exciting news and disappointments abound for fans of Overwatch 2 as recent reports suggest that the game's PvE mode has been permanently scrapped. According to Bloomberg, Blizzard is struggling to find focus for the hero shooter sequel.
The PvE mode, which initially received three missions back in 2023, will not be receiving any more content due to poor sales of the initial pack. This decision comes as part of a larger company-wide reduction in staff, with the game's PvE department being heavily affected.
Developers working on Overwatch 2 were reportedly informed that the planned PvE content will not be finished. The game's poor financial performance in the first half of the year seems to have played a significant role in this decision.
Despite the challenges faced by Overwatch 2, Blizzard has announced some positive news for players. Heroes will be free at release starting with Season 10 in mid-April. This means that players will no longer have to purchase a premium battle pass to unlock new characters, or grind for hours to unlock them through the free track of the battle pass.
In a recent developer update, game director Aaron Keller expressed his excitement over this decision, stating, "Heroes are one of the most exciting additions to the game and we want all of our players to have immediate access to them when they launch, which is why I’m thrilled to share that Venture and all future heroes will be free for all players when they launch."
While the news of the scrapped PvE mode may be disappointing for some fans, the promise of free heroes at launch brings a glimmer of hope for the future of Overwatch 2.
