Riot Games, the renowned game development studio behind League of Legends, has recently provided an exciting update on their highly anticipated League of Legends MMO. Although the game is still in development, it seems like fans will have to wait a few more years before they can get their hands on it.
In a detailed thread on X, studio co-founder Marc Merrill shared insights about the project. He mentioned that Riot is fully committed to the MMO, which was initially announced back in December 2020. However, the studio made a bold decision to go back to the drawing board and reset the direction of the game a few years ago.
Merrill stated, "After a lot of reflection and discussion, we’ve decided to reset the direction of the project some time ago. This decision wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. The initial vision just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today."
He further added, "We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre."
The project is now under the leadership of executive producer Fabrice Condominas. As a seasoned industry professional who previously worked on games like Star Wars: Squadrons and Mass Effect, Condominas is spearheading this ambitious project.
Riot's decision to reset the development path means that the team will be "going dark" for an extended period, potentially several years. This silent phase is crucial for the team to focus on the intensive work ahead without distractions, as Merrill emphasized the importance of trust from the community during this time.
Interestingly, Riot also revealed details about their League of Legends fighting game, previously known as Project L, which is now officially titled 2XKO. The studio has set a target release window of 2025 for this 2v2 tag-based fighter on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
