Warner Bros. Shifts Focus to Live-service, Mobile, and Free-to-Play Games

Nathan Lees

A new direction in Warner Bros. Gaming strategy was recently unveiled during a Morgan Stanley speaking event by the Warner Bros. Discovery gaming boss, J.B. Perrette. With a shift away from AAA console games, the company plans to focus more on live-service, mobile and free-to-play games, according to Gamespot.

Perrette highlighted that Warner Bros. is looking to leverage their vast pool of Intellectual Property (IP) and the unique capabilities of their game studios to tap into high-growth opportunities in the gaming sector. It's clear that the company envisions a future where gaming is more than a one-time release. Instead, they want to create interactive worlds, where gamers are engaged on an ongoing basis, factors seen in live-service games.

A potentially surprising pivot, given the success Warner Bros. experienced with their 2023 title 'Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy.' This game broke records by selling 22 million copies by the end of 2023, a feat never achieved before by a game not belonging to Call of Duty or Rockstar in a span of 15 years.
