Yet Another Nintendo Emulator Forced to Shut Down After Lawsuit

Nathan Lees

It seems like tough times for Nintendo emulator fans as another beloved emulator bites the dust. Pizza Emulators, the go-to choice for Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color games on Android, has been yanked from the Google Play Store following a recent settlement in a high-profile lawsuit.

The developer, Davide Berra, cited personal reasons for the shutdown in a Discord message picked up by The Verge. Berra mentioned that he needed to prioritize his family over continuing the development of his apps, without specifically acknowledging the Nintendo lawsuit settlement that shook the emulator community.

This recent settlement has had a domino effect, leading to the closure of the popular Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu, and subsequently shutting down the 3DS emulator Citra. This decision has sparked controversy among game preservationists who are passionate about maintaining access to older titles.

While Yuzu's capabilities to play current commercial software backups have raised ethical concerns, Citra has been somewhat spared from harsh criticism due to its focus on archive titles that are no longer available for purchase from Nintendo.

With Nintendo permanently shuttering the 3DS eShop back in March 2023, gamers are finding it increasingly challenging to legally acquire digital titles from the handheld console's library. The absence of eShop exclusives has left a void in game preservation efforts, making the closure of emulators like Citra even more impactful.
