BT broadband customers have found themselves facing unexpected charges for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. This issue, which has been persisting since at least October 2023, has led to an additional £10 being added to the monthly bills of unsuspecting customers.
The problem came to light when affected customers started noticing these unwarranted charges on their accounts. One customer realized the issue only after receiving an email thanking him for activating the subscription. Upon inquiry, a customer service representative attributed the mishap to a glitch between BT and Microsoft, leading to random activations of the Game Pass on customer accounts.
BT has since issued an apology, stating, "We’re very sorry that the customers mentioned in this article have had Xbox Game Pass Ultimate added to their account without their knowledge" a spokesperson told the BBC. The company urges all its customers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious account activity immediately.
The scope of this issue and the exact reasons behind these unauthorized charges remain unclear. BT has not provided detailed information on how widespread the problem is or the steps being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
This incident raises concerns about digital subscription management and the need for transparent communication between service providers and their customers. As the situation unfolds, BT customers are advised to closely monitor their accounts and contact customer service if they notice any unexpected charges.
