New Team at Xbox Focused on Game Preservation and Forward Compatibility

Nathan Lees

News recently surfaced about a new initiative at Xbox spearheaded by Sarah Bond, who took over as president of the brand last year, to focus on this very topic.

An exclusive article by Windows Central revealed the details from a series of internal emails, with a primary focus on briefings led by Sarah Bond. The standout revelation was the establishment of a dedicated team aimed at “future-proofing digital game libraries across future hardware paradigms.”

In a statement captured by Jez Corden in his write-up for Windows Central, Sarah Bond expressed, “We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself. We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy.”

Xbox has grand ambitions for the years ahead, with plans for what has been described as the “biggest technological leap ever in a generation,” as mentioned by Sarah Bond in a recent podcast update. But part of looking forward also involves acknowledging the past – a crucial aspect for veteran gamers eager to have all their games, including retro titles, easily accessible in one place.

As discussions around game preservation continue to gain traction, some passionate gamers have taken matters into their own hands by pursuing legal action against publishers and developers for shutting down live service games. While we’ve witnessed projects being discontinued and games getting pulled offline in the evolving landscape of the gaming industry, this is indicative of the challenges faced by the sector over the past year and a half.
